Nanjing International Youth Cultural Center is located on the riverside of Hexi New Town, Nanjing New Business Center (CBD). The project integrates multiple functions, including two hotel towers, a conference and cultural center, an urban plaza, office space and a multi-purpose area. The main tower with a total height of 314.5 meters and a total of 68 floors is the Jumeirah five-star hotel and office. The sub-tower has a total height of 249.5 meters and a total of 58 floors. It is the International Youth Conference Hotel and supporting facilities. The 46.9-meter-high, 6-story conference center.
The project covers an area of 5.2 hectares, with a total construction area of about 490,000 square meters and a total investment of about 4 billion yuan, of which the total construction area above ground is 367,000 square meters, the total underground construction area is 114,000 square meters, and the green area is 30,000 square meters. The project not only breathes new life into Nanjing's conference and cultural facilities, but also becomes a landmark building in Nanjing Hexi New Town.
The Nanjing Youth Olympic Cultural Center is designed by Zaha Hadid Architects. It is understood that this is the tallest building in all the works of Zaha Hadid Architects. The project adopts a highly three-dimensional streamlined design, inspired by the traditional jacquard silk handicraft Yunjin in Nanjing. Yunjin is hand-woven by craftsmen with gold and silver threads. This landmark building also uses smooth line design to connect the cultural center, new central business district, Binjiang Park and Jiangxinzhou Island one by one, making full use of Yunjin elements.
The outline of the tower gradually narrows as the height increases, creating a sense of perspective, and the façade adopts a trapezoidal structure, which can maximize the length of the floor facing the Yangtze River and the double-deck elevator, making the planning efficiency of the core area increased by 50%.
It is reported that this extremely modern and sculptural building is more difficult to construct than a bird's nest. The bird's nest has standard units, and the modules can be built and assembled directly. But the Nanjing Youth Olympic Center does not have standardized units. No part is the same. The complex curved shape and honeycomb recessed opening fan spread throughout the entire curtain wall, involving 12,500 independent panels and 3,400 structures, which greatly challenged the mental and physical strength of the builders. However, the Youth Olympic Center built today has become the most modern building in Nanjing.
The façade of the two main towers of the project is very special, made of diamond-shaped glass panels of different sizes, tempered glass and aluminum panels. At the junction between the tower and the podium, the glass façade gradually transforms into a grid of diamond-shaped fiber-reinforced concrete panels that extend vertically from the top to the base of the building. The exterior design of the building has the same curved design, extending vertically to the top of the building, its lines are smooth and excessively natural, which not only emphasizes the dynamic character of the form, but also provides sufficient daylight for the building interior. The LED lighting system is installed in the curtain wall, so that the building emits an intoxicating light at night.
The outer skin of the conference center is completely different from the two main towers. The roof of the conference center is all installed with GRC panels. Unlike the stereotyped glass curtain wall, the GRC panels meet the designer's requirements for the appearance of the building to the greatest extent. The tower is clearly distinguished visually, and this project is also the largest GRC panel installation project in China.
Today, the completed Nanjing International Youth Cultural Center has become a landmark building in the region and even in Nanjing. Its dynamic lines are full of the breath of the times, and it will surely become a symbol of contemporary Chinese architecture.
